SopCast Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Which media player must i have installed to view channels?
A: We suggest that you use Windows Media Player 11 or above or latest RealPlayer Alternative to play the stream. Other players (VLC, MPlayer, Media Player Classic) may be also be used.
Method 1
Open Sopcast, click on options (bottom right), click on use my own media player, and browse till you find the VLC.exe, MPlayer.exe, WMP or Media Player Classic.exe, then click ok..
Open a channel in Sopcast when it buffers up to 50% or more click on the double square at the bottom of the media player, this should open the stream in your desired player...
Method 2
Right click on Sopcast screen to get its properties "http://127.0.0.1:8902/stream" and copy and paste that into your desired player.
Example for VLC
Media > Open Network Stream > "Copy and past URL" > Play
Q2. Get "Can not access sop service" error message after clicking channel and trying to start?
A: You maybe have a bad connection to SopCast serivces and the SopPlayer didn't initialize normally. You can restart SopPlayer or re-open the WebPlayer page and have a try again.
Q3. Get "Can not retrieve data" error message after buffering?
A: In this case, you get peers list successfully and exchange stream data with them, but they all have no right data to feed you, your usually have a lower buffer, if this condition lasts for so much time, you will get the error message and the channel will stop buffering.
This problem will occurred in some condition as below:
- You have bad connections to all peers.
- All peers have no right data because of time synchronization.
- The SopServer has quit abnormally.
- Too lower QC (quality of client network).
Q4. RealPlayer has no sounds or the sound does not synchronize with the video?
A: This problem occurred often when streaming a rm/rmvb video, and seems to be a bug of RealPlayer. You can resolve this problem with the following step:
- Click the “opened in external player” button at bottom right corner of SopPlayer.
- Smoothly move the Real player process bar to and fro when the video is playing
Q5. How long time is buffering time usually?
A: It depends on your Internet access connection and the QC (quality of client network), This period will last about 10-60 seconds usually.
Q6. What firewall policy will be used when we are using SopCast?
A: We use the P2P technology to transfer the media content. That means when you get media content from other nodes, you also share your data to others. In order to get a better quality of stream, you should open some necessary ports to permit inbound connection.
For SopPlayer, we recommend open 3900-13900 ports for inbound connections.
For SopServer, must open 3900-4900 ports for inbound connections.
If your personal firewall has the automatic configuration function, for example Symantec Internet security, Microsoft internal firewall with the XP sp2, select allow or permit if you see the information to ask you whether permit SopCast.exe to access the Internet or not. Or turn off till after you viewed the stream
Q7. How can I monitor the quality of a channel?
A: Two parameters could be used to monitor the quality of a channel. One is the quality of source (QS) and another is the quality of client network (QC). QS stands for the quality of the channel source. The low QS value means the SopServer has the poor quality to receive the channel content and it will result in the poor quality for all of the views. QC stands for the average quality for the watcher receiving the channel contents. High QC value means the p2p network is great and every watcher can receive most of the channel content in its buffer.
Your can click the blue “quality bar” on WebPlayer or SopClient to see the quality of a channel.
Q8. Why the percent of my buffering shows high, I still can not watch the channel with the high quality?
A: Perhaps the channel has a bad QS, or the channel just lost the feed.
Q9. I get a blank screen how do I fix it?
A: This could be a number of reasons like missing codecs, Operating System etc…
Q10. It doesn't open the channel when I click the link!
This is mostly due to Windows Vista. How to solve it?
A: *Start Sopcast manually
*Go to our schedule pages
*Copy the link manually (right mouse on the PLAY link --> copy the url location/copy hyperlink with sop://)
*Put it on top in the sopcast adress bar
*Press enter/the blue white arrow , and the channel will start
Q11. Do i need Sopcast installed to play a sop:// streams...?
A: Put simple NO but you will need SopFilter. SopFilter is a plugin for Windows Media Player (WMP). With SopFilter you can watch SopCast channels by WMP directly. It also simplifies your experience to embed channels to your web page.
